- The vehicle was brought in for a wheel alignment after a rack and pinion replacement had been performed previously. During the inspection, the technician found that the steering wheel was severely off-center. One tie rod was adjusted all the way inward to its maximum limit, and the steering wheel had more turning travel to the left than to the right, indicating the rack and steering shaft were not properly centered during installation. To correct the issue, it was necessary to disconnect the steering shaft from the rack and pinion assembly and re-index/re-center the steering components properly. After repositioning the steering shaft and centering the rack, the alignment adjustments were performed to restore proper steering wheel position and steering travel operation.
